The sun was up really early. At 6.45am it felt like 9am in Singapore.
Breakfast was at a cafe near our hotel. This morning was on tight schedule because we were expected on a half day city tour. As soon as we sat down at a table, three cups of tea dropped in front of us. That was the practice i realised, when we sit down at an eatery they immediately served you drinks - usually tea or water.
I still prefer the toast from hongkong cafe in singapore, it tastes more crispy and thicker, not flat looking like this.
Our tourguide, who was trying very hard to be funny. That poor guy, nobody laughs at his jokes. Let's give him some credit. We were brought to some tourist spots and manufactures, but we concluded that we would be better off on our own because the people there were pretty pushy in making us purchase their goods, it made us feel very bad for rejecting them. But anyway we still made the best out of the tour, enjoying the sights that we saw.
Golden Bohemian Square
That's the tallest tower in Hongkong.
Aberdeen Fishing Village
As the name suggests, this is a fishing village where the villagers lived on their ships, sampans, boats (whatever you call it) for their entire lives. The younger generation has moved on to land (because of government policy) while the older generation are entitled to freedom of choice. We rode on a sampan to see the living conditions, and it wasn't exactly like paradise. The waters were littered, and the ships were rundown.
Salted fish being dried in the sun.
Our sampan driver, once again we din't expect it to be another business gimmick. She surprised us when she uncovered a whole lot of souveniors which were already nicely laid out under a blanket.
Of course, the mode of transport was by boat. What else did you expect?
The renowned jumbo floating restaurant in the backdrop. Apparently the food isn't that fantastic as our tourguide suggested that we could get better food out there because people are paying for the decorations (as expected).
Repulse Bay
Supposingly the nicest beach in Hongkong where some of the richest people live nearby.
Our tourguide said Jackie Chan lives up there in one of the houses and if we wanted to have tea with Jackie we could tell him because he knew Jackie very well, but the problem is Jackie din't know him.
We also visited a herbal shop and jewellery shop which we din't enjoy (as expected)
We were dismissed at Tsim Sha Tsui and lunch was on our own.
We tried the noodles there and it was unusually salty. I swear it wasn't my fault.
In the evening, we went to see the avenue of stars. It was a performance that occurs every evening at 8pm. The buildings would all light up with lights and act in sync with music.
Avenue of Stars
We sat along the coast and enjoyed the sea breeze. It was somewhat like the boat quay just many times better.
Very pretty sight :D
Nicely coloured buildings.
We decided to walk back to our hotel after the show, at the same time doing some shopping along the streets. We walked along our favourite Nathan Road, and scary people randomly talked to us which we just ignored (because we din't know what they were saying) and there were people touting and telling us they had rooms to rent if we wanted. 0.o In the Tsim Sha Tsui area, we were casually shopping and decided to head back to the hotel when the shops started closing. And with a wrong turn, we got lost. The streets all looked the same and with only the night pubs left open, some streets were dark. Random girls walked out looking drunk. We found our way back eventually, we just needed to follow the right signs.
Kimberly Hotel
Our room!
After enough of camwhoring in our room which was still nice and tidy, we went out to shop. There wasn't much to do because half the day was gone.
Purchasing our Octopus cards.. Taking cab across the island is Expensive because we had to pay Toll. We learnt that one day. We had a little advice from our "tour guide" to take cab within the island and MTR across island. Hongkong could be divided into Kowloon, Lautau and Hong kong islands.
We walked along Nathan Road (which stretches for at least three MTR stations) and in ladies street (we had no idea it was) till we got so tired, and Elaine craved for bubble tea~ "Pearls! I'll buy pearls if i see pearls!" They had this big cup of bubble tea that cost about S$2plus which they call Gong Cha, the queue was super long, business was continuous. We saw it on the first day but skipped it because we were still enthusiastic about other things. By day 3, elaine's cravings just couldn't be resisted. hahaha.
We stood by the street looking on at the crowd, enjoying our desired bubble tea. Hongkong had twice as much land as Singapore and twice as many people. But 75% of the land were mountain hence that makes flat land extremely populated. The buildings were very tall, each residential building were easily forty storeys high. And we had dinner at Ajisen Ramen. Apparently Ajisen in Hongkong has a different menu from that in Singapore and we were recommended to try.
Suspicious character. Heh.
We continued shopping and took photos of the street after dinner.
We came across a VJC shop. LOL. Which was EX. At that time the shop was already closed because we were walking back to the hotel. And we looked like terrorist suspiciously taking photos infront of a dark shop.
Irony of the signboards.
End of day one. To be continued..
